Sometimes in concert I’ll tell the audience that in writing this song it came to me “in a dream” and I woke up and wrote it all down in 15 minutes. Actually, it was a cold winter’s night in February, and I wrote the melody first and then most of the chords in a short period of time, maybe that 15-20 minutes. The concept was simple, and contrast is a beautiful idea in music composition. On Soprano a slow, lyrical, consonant beginning, rubato-like, and then Freedom to play in time/out of time, consonant/dissonant, inside/outside. Got to have the right folks and with Bobby, Tony, Alex, it was happening! Love to do this tune in concert. We never play it the same way twice, and it always gets a good response. This surprises me as there is a lot of Free, sometimes atonal, but also sweet and lyrical playing, and the rhythm in and out of time. Who says people do not appreciate Free or Avant Garde Jazz? Let’s just say folks appreciate good music!
