I spoke elsewhere (as in about the original tune Movin’ On (Spiral, Summit Records, 2010) here about starting with a chord sequence, and a certain feel, and then filling in the melody. Because we are not saying the melody is at all inconsequential, but the chords and the feel/style of course set up the solo. This was one of my favorite chord progressions to write, and sometime later, uh-oh, without recognizing at the time, (honest, ha-ha), I realized it was pretty darn like that of another well-known tune. The feel, the style, was different, however; very Afro-Cuban. Also, the melody has some mixed meter, based in 4, but slipping in and out of 3. Became difficult a little quirky to solo over, so we put the solos in 4 completely. Have to hand it again to this remarkable rhythm section, the incredible band on this recording, an all-star lineup of Bobby Avey-Piano, Tony Marino-Bass, Alex Ritz-Drums (members of the Dave Liebman Group), for really nailing it on this tune; especially Bobby as he laid down this very singular chucka-chucka groove that I don’t think I’ve heard anyone quite duplicate since (even Bobby, himself, on the various gigs we played together at the time). On Tenor, I was going for something on this tune, channeling one of my heroes, the great Pharoah Sanders. I came close.
