I have an original Afro-Cuban style arrangement in 12/8 of this classic that I have been doing since the early 90’s always on tenor, my main axe. It often functions as a concert closer, and always gets a great response. This has appeared on three of my recordings now, for some reason, (One Night At Chris’, which is like a Greatest Hits record anyway, as well as my 2nd recording My Time (Dreambox Media, 2006), and I have been told to stop recording it. Probably a good move!
Anyway, we love doing the song on the gig. The guys get to stretch out, solo at will, and play loud or soft, fast, and slow, and Free. Live it usually runs 15 minutes plus, and we get our rocks off. Good fun!
lyrics
Summertime and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your ma is good lookin'
So hush, little baby, don't you cry
One of these mornin's, you're gonna rise up singin'
You're gonna spread your wings and you'll take to the sky
But 'til that mornin', there is nothin' can harm you
With Daddy and Mummy, standing by
Don't you, don't you cry
