about

Our title tune is sort of like a Suite, akin to in Classical music terms Sonata Allegro form, with different movements, just here an A-B-C-B-Coda form, the Coda being how we end it. Form has always intrigued me, and if I am guilty of anything in my own compositions, it is of being overstructured, and then when we go to play some of these tunes out live, well sometimes it’s hard for the guys to keep up with the structure? Lately, though, it has been going well, praise the Lord. One of our more popular tunes to play in concert, Spiral always gets a good response, and a good reason is all the catchy turns in the form, including a nice jam out session at the end between sax and piano (kept at bey in the studio in the interest of brevity). A little insight, for the first 8 measures, as an intro type of thing; the chord progression came straight out of Stan Kenton’s Intermission Riff. The melody here my own; however, people would say it sounded the same as the familiar four note NBC TV station break! Here, notes E-A-E-B (Really 4ths and 5ths were the design). Never entered my mind! Anyway, these cats Phil, Tony, Adam, they can play anything, that day in the studio was no exception, and they set the tempo on this one, and off we went, and wow, the tune hung in there and really swung and went great!
