The Dave Wilson Quartet’s Stretching Supreme (Dave Wilson Music) is Available Now for purchase digitally on the Bandcamp site, as well as physical copies are also now available.

This 7 song live recording, taped at Philadelphia’s own Chris’ Jazz club, includes 5 John Coltrane compositions, the three song suite “Love Supreme”, “Dear Lord”, “Naima”, a Wilson original “On the Prairie” and the Mancini classic “Days Of Wine and Roses”.

The performances of Coltrane’s work are the fruition of the quartet’s long-time lineup as well as Wilson’s journey as a saxophonist going back to his early teen years. As Wilson states, “...one of the first jazz records I ever bought was John Coltrane’s Live at the Village Vanguard. I was hooked. On this night I owed so much to my long-time band mates, Kirk, Tony, and Alex. We hit some magic, got in a groove and stayed there. We felt a spirit, a creative flow and were in the moment.”

In the Coltrane compositions, Wilson’s artistry shines, weaving through the legendary saxophonist’s epic suite, with a fluidity that is fresh, exciting, vibrant, while spanning all the nuances and dynamics of an arsenal of tenor and soprano horns.

    Early Reviews are in!
“A sax bad boy that knows his stuff pays tribute to Coltrane and doing a fine job interpreting music that lives on 60 years later…Count on this journey through the past to hit all the right notes at every turn.”
    -Chris Spector, Midwest Record, midwestrecord.com/MWR1841.html
“An excellent CD, fully worthy of the one to whom most of the music is dedicated. Wilson was able to achieve Trane’s massive tone, and he really has managed to duplicate his rich, vibrato less sound on tenor, which is a miracle in itself.”

“Wilson and his teammates are clearly invested in the enterprise, musically and emotionally… there is enticing jazz to be uncorked here and handsome solos.” – All About Jazz
-All About Jazz by Jack Bowers

“Dave Wilson’s post-bop flavored presentation showcases his love of John Coltrane’s influence and skills, but clearly spotlights Wilson’s own dexterity and style on woodwinds. You will enjoy his free form exploration of this music, especially on his singular, original composition… an innovative project that I enjoyed from start to finish.”
-Musical Memoirs by Dee Dee McNeil musicalmemoirs.wordpress.com

The disc’s authentic live sound is the result of prolific engineer Kent Heckman of Red Rock Studios in Saylorsburg, PA. As Wilson says. “We were able to capture the magic of a live recording on a good night, and there was no reason to edit or chop these songs down to take away from it. It’s all here in its entirety.

Check out our three other recordings by the Dave Wilson Quartet on Bandcamp. We have two earlier ones that will soon be added, Through The Time (2002, Dreamscape Records) and My Time (2006, Dreambox Media)

about

(John Coltrane, Jowcol Music, Inc BMI)

A Love Supreme,
INTRO TO PART 1: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
PART 1: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
PART 2: RESOLUTION

The short Intro is really the introduction to “Part 1, Acknowledgement”. “Part 1: Acknowledgement” and “Part 2: Resolution” are the first two numbers on the original recording. The one flows into the other. A Love Supreme is an inspiration to Coltrane fans everywhere. The concept is spiritual, about Trane’s own search for self and enlightenment. In his book A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album, (2002, Viking Penguin), Ashley Kahn writes "...the album was intended to represent a struggle for purity, an expression of gratitude, and an acknowledgement that the musician's talent comes from a higher power.” So many listeners (and players) have been inspired by this recording. You can listen repeatedly and not get tired of it. It has inspired a generation of players. Nothing new to report here. It hits me in the core. We were lucky with these two renditions, and our version of Dear Lord that followed, because we hit some magic, we got in a groove and stayed there. We felt a spirit, a creative flow. We were in the moment. On this night I owed so much to my band mates, Kirk, Tony, and Alex.
