about

This original tune was a centerpiece of Spiral, and one of the more successful cuts on the recording. It is like a blues in that there is movement from the I to IV to V chords, and then an all too familiar tag, but the 12-bar form is abandoned. I might tell an unfamiliar rhythm section to treat the style as a “Jazz Boogaloo” or “Kind of like (Lee Morgan’s) Sidewinder. We had a lot of fun with this in the studio, and back then, the tune was relatively new, had not been performed that much, and these amazing cats Phil Markowitz, Tony Marino, and especially Adam Nussbaum on the drums came up with a unique, very marvelous feel for the song. I think we did it in about two takes, can’t remember which one we took, but it came off real easy. By design I played a real soft tenor sound and feel on this one, something I hardly do at all on performances now, as we all go a lot harder. This song has become a staple of our performances. Listen to our version on One Night At Chris’. I remember I was channeling the great Lucky Thompson somewhat that day. Listen to Adam’s brushwork especially, (Adam Nussbaum, one of the best brushwork jazz drummers-one of the best drummers, period); he was the one who said, “I think I’m going to play brushes on this one”. Everyone brought it down, and we all played rather sweet but driving with a perfect groove. While it did get particularly good airplay, we were a little surprised it did not completely take off, as it was a perfect tune for listening as you drive down the road. Attitude is gratitude and we were very happy with the way it came out!
