about

I first saw Elm performed live in concert with the fantastic Saxophonist Dave Liebman and his band Sphere, back in the 90’s with the composer, the great creative genius Richie Bierach and Bassist Ron McClure in attendance. I had the opportunity to study just a small amount with Lieb (as his friends call him), wish I had done more. He has been a big influence regardless in my development as a saxophonist, carrying on the legacy of master teacher Joe Allard and himself as a master of the pedagogy. He was for many years a resident of the Pocono region, about 100 miles from here, and I recorded the album There Was Never with members of his current group. We have a lot of friends in common, and I am grateful to count as a friend and musical compatriot his long-time bassist Tony Marino, (one of the best in the world), who was on my last three recordings and whom I have played many an engagement.
With our version of Elm we switched it up somewhat doing a double time feel for the most part except for the last chorus, as a coda, slowing it down and then stretching it out playing free at the end. Extremely fortunate to have this band of Phil Markowitz, Tony Marino, and Adam Nussbaum as they all have experience playing with the great saxophonist, and (as I mentioned) Tony Marino being his regular bassist for the last two decades plus. We had a sensitive treatment of Richie Bierach classic, even though looking back 10+ years later, I’m not overjoyed with the soprano solo I took. I did like the ending, however. Listen and you be the judge.
