about

As said, we like to take some of our favorite Pop tunes and put our own unique spin on them, maybe adding or subtracting, adding a different feel. And we like the Grateful Dead, as we said in the track listing on this site for Friend of The Devil (Spiral, Summit Records, 2010 and in the live version in One Night at Chris’, Dave Wilson Music, 2019). The Lyrics can influence my choice in what I like and wish to cover in this genre. From Cassidy (Speaks to me):
“Fare thee well now
Let your life proceed by its own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine”
Read the lyrics for this track. They refer to Neal Cassidy, the real, larger than life character, and central figure to Jack Kerouac in his novel On The Road, integral part to the saga of Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters, the Acid Tests, and friend to the Grateful Dead,
I almost tripped over myself in putting this tune together. A lot of disparate parts, and there was a section from the original Dead classic that I left out altogether. My intent was to really involve a jam section (here at the beginning-sax, and at the end-piano), fill in some individual motifs from the original, and emphasize the chorus, words of which are printed above, which is the real hook of this beautiful song, a staple of many a Dead Show. Again, the incredible band on this recording, an all-star lineup of Bobby Avey-Piano, Tony Marino-Bass, Alex Ritz-Drums (members of the Dave Liebman Group), came through on this recording; they made it happen! As I said for Friend of the Devil, I love the Dead, saw Jerry Garcia and/or the band 30 times over the years, and will probably cover more of their tunes. Rock on!

lyrics

I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream
I can tell by the mark he left, you were in his dream
Ah child of countless trees
Ah child of boundless seas
What you are, and what you're meant to be
Speaks his name, though you were born to me
Born to me
Cassidy
Lost now on the country miles in his Cadillac
I can tell by the way you smile, he is rolling back
Come wash the nighttime clean
Come grow the scorched ground green
Blow the horn, and tap the tambourine
Close the gap of the dark years in between
You and me
Cassidy
Quick beats in an icy heart
Catch colt draws a coffin cart
There he goes and now here she starts
Hear her cry
Flight of the seabirds
Scattered like lost words
Wield to the storm and fly
Fare thee well now
Let your life proceed by it's own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine
Fare thee well now
Let your life proceed by it's own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine
Fare thee well now
Let your life proceed by it's own design
Nothing to tell now
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine
I'm done with mine
Flight of the seabirds
Scattered like lost words
Wield to the storm and fly
